Through immersive stories and sweeping views, we’ll uncover how Portsmouth’s patriots helped ignite America’s fight for freedom.

    Step into Boston’s North End with your guide, Joel Mackall, and uncover the city’s earliest Black history, rooted at the birth of America. This two-hour walking tour connects colonial Boston to today’s evolving city, beginning at Haymarket with the stories of three African women who lived there in the 1600s. We’ll explore the Atlantic world at Long Wharf, architecture and media at the Revere House, and the early Black community’s activism at Copp’s Hill Cemetery where over 1,000 Black Bostonians are interred. The tour offers a powerful foundation for understanding how Black life, survival, and resistance shaped the Commonwealth’s earliest days.

    Join Mike Manning of the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk (FBHW) for a two-hour walking tour exploring the layers of history along Boston’s waterfront. Beginning at the Mirabella Pool in the North End, we’ll visit the site where the USS Constitution was built, trace the path of the 1919 Great Molasses Flood, and discuss pivotal moments like the 1863 Civil War Draft Riot and the 1950 Brink’s Robbery. Crossing the Bill Russell Memorial Bridge into Charlestown, we’ll enter the historic Navy Yard to explore its founding in 1801, shipbuilding legacy, and transformation after its closure in 1974. The tour concludes at the USS Constitution Museum around 12:30 PM.

    Mike Manning is a native Bostonian with roots in the Charlestown and South Boston neighborhoods. During the work week, he is an engineer in the energy/clean transportation fields. On weekends, Mike leads the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk (FBHW) - a volunteer group with a mission to publicize and promote Boston's 43-mile-long Harborwalk. He is also an advisor to the USS Constitution Museum and a senior docent at the Collings Foundation.

    Walk the historic slopes of Beacon Hill with your guide, Joel Mackall, and uncover the powerful story of Boston’s early Black community. This two-hour tour follows the African American Freedom Trail, highlighting community building, activism, religion, civil rights, and abolition from the aftermath of the American Revolution through the early 1900s. Along the way, we’ll lift up the voices of Maria Stewart, David Walker, and the Trotters’ activism on Boston Common. The tour begins at the USCT 54th Shaw Memorial, winds down to Charles Street, and ends at the African Meeting House on Joy Street.

    Please note:
    The afternoon tours are scheduled to coordinate with the morning walking tours. Participants will have a 90-minute break for lunch after the morning tours before joining the afternoon programs.
